One person lost their life, and nine others sustained injuries, with three in critical condition, five in serious condition, and one with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred near a garage west of Union Station, where thousands had gathered to revel in the Chiefs’ back-to-back championship. The joyful occasion turned somber as the sound of gunshots echoed through the crowd, prompting panic and chaos.

The Kansas City Police Department promptly detained two individuals connected to the shooting. Law enforcement officials, engaged in a preliminary investigation, asserted that the incident seemed criminal and not an act of terrorism.

The Biden administration closely monitored the events, with federal law enforcement supporting local efforts. 

Chiefs players, still on the stage when the shooting occurred, expressed their shock and solidarity on social media. Linebacker Drue Tranquill urged prayers for the victims, emphasising the need for healing, while quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted on X, stating, “Praying for Kansas City.”

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, present at the celebration, was safely evacuated. 

The tragic incident cast a shadow over what had been a joyous day, with an estimated one million people in attendance, celebrating their team’s triumph.

The community mourns the loss of life and stands in solidarity with those affected by this senseless act of violence.
