‘Touken Ranbu Kai’ Prequel Anime Movie Announced for August 2024

The eighth and final episode of the Touken Ranbu Kai: Kyoden Moyuru Honnouji television anime announced a prequel anime movie subtitled Touken Ranbu Douden: Chikashi Habera Umonora on Tuesday, revealing returning cast, staff, and a teaser visual (pictured). The anime movie features a completely new story and is set to open in Japanese theaters on August 16.

Tarusuke Shingaki (Noblesse) and Tomoaki Maeno (Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken) are returning to voice Heshikiri Hasebe and Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, respectively.

Kazuya Ichikawa (Romantic Killer) is returning to direct the anime movie at domerica. Kenichi Suemitsu and Mari Takada (Shakunetsu Kabaddi) are returning to handle the screenplay and character design, respectively. Ryuunosuke Kasai (Koi wa Sekai Seifuku no Ato de) is also returning to compose the music. Other staff members are also returning.

Produced by domerica, the 8-episode television anime began airing in Spring 2024. Crunchyroll streamed the anime with English subtitles worldwide, excluding Asia.

Touken Ranbu Kai: Kyoden Moyuru Honnouji is based on the first stage play of Nitroplus and DMM Games’ Touken Ranbu online card collectible game, which ran in Tokyo and Osaka in 2016.

Based on the game, Doga Kobo produced two Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru anime seasons in Fall 2016 and Winter 2018, each running for 12 episodes. The game was also adapted into the 13-episode Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu television anime by ufotable in Summer 2017.

Nitroplus and DMM Games released the game in Japan in January 2015. Game platform Johren released the game in English for browsers in April 2021 and on smartphones in August of that year. The franchise also inspired musicals and live-action movies.
